Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Thread Up Oxford stand for?

At its simplest, we stand for textile waste reduction.

Thread Up Oxford is devoted to changing how the local and regional community uses textiles. The goal is to eliminate most of the textile waste that our current consumer culture sends to a landfill.

  • Is Thread Up Oxford a Non-Profit?

Yes! While we have acquired 501(c)3 status which allows us to offer tax deductions to individuals or businesses that give charitable contribution.

  • Why is "Textile Reduction" so important?

Because the clothing waste that ends up in the landfill can take up to 200 years to decompose, often leaking dangerous chemicals from dyes into soil and water during the process. (ugh!)

    • The United Nations Environment Program estimates the fashion industry is responsible for 2-8% of global carbon emissions.

    • As much as 84% of the clothes Americans purchase end up in landfills, making up more than 5% of municipal waste. The volume has more than doubled since 1990. (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)

  • Are you a textile recycling company or a social services agency?

    Yes.

    Only (slightly) kidding.

Thread Up Oxford’s multi-prong approach to reduce textile waste in the community includes education, textile collection, and distribution.

As an extension, we have also taken on the real, challenging, need in the Oxford community of redistributing donated clothes to those with a hardship.

“With as many clothes that are in circulation, there is no excuse for anybody to go without quality clothing,” says Founder Shana Rosenberg. “A healthy community has a healthy wardrobe!”

  • What items do you accept?
